Google

Cons:

  • May have extreme layovers or airport transfers.

  • Itineraries may have multiple self-transfers. (This is where your checked bag isn’t sent all the way to your destination and you need to retrieve it from baggage claim and recheck it during some layovers)

  • Flight cancellations or delays when flying multiple airlines can severely mess up your travel more than when flying a single airline.

  • Ticket refunds through a third-party booking site can be tricky. (It took me a year to receive a refund for a round-trip booking to Sydney and Fiji because the flights got canceled)

Google Flights seems to be a nice medium between booking through Kayak and directly through the airline. Tends to offer a good ratio between affordability and ease.

Pros:

  • Comes with the Google Explore feature.

  • The Google Explore feature will also show destinations that are a driving distance from airports as possible destinations.

  • It tends to show more options than Kayak or booking directly through an airline.

  • Calculates each itinerary’s carbon footprint to allow travelers to pick the route with a smaller footprint.

  • Has the most expansive destination list out of the booking options.

  • You can search across a range of dates as large as 6 months to find the cheapest possible flights.

  • Is able to create multiple itineraries through different airlines to provide one whole itinerary to purchase.

  • When choosing dates to travel, it will provide you with the cheapest ticket price available on each day when picking.
